Interventional Neuroradiology

A medical subspecialty, interventional neuroradiology uses minimally invasive imaging technologies and procedures to diagnose and treat diseases of the head, neck and spine. Unlike the sturdy blood vessels in the heart and other parts of the body, the fragile vessels in the head, neck and spine some barely the thickness of a human hair coil and curve extensively, requiring an experienced touch during medical procedures to avoid damage.

Exceptional Care at Richmond's Leading Provider

Through our Neurovascular Center at HCA Virginia, you can be treated for vascular diseases of the brain, head, neck and spine, including arteriovenous malformation (AVM).

Our board-certified interventional neuroradiologists more specialists than at any other Richmond provider have the additional training, knowledge, skill and extensive practice to safely carry out delicate neurological procedures and deliver better outcomes when placing a catheter with precision, without harming surrounding tissue or structures.

All Treatment Options Available to You

We know and perform a wide variety of neuroradiology treatments, including:

  • Kypho/vertebroplasty
  • Coiling of aneurysms
  • Treatment of AVMs
  • Tumor embolization
  • Clot retrieval devices used for ischemic stroke
  • Clot busting drugs for ischemic stroke

For example, one of our well received techniques takes a catheter directly into the brain, instead of first passing it through the heart for imaging and treatment, which shortens surgical time and reduces the chance of potential complications.

Blood clots in the vessels of the brain are handled with the Merci, Penumbra of the new Trevo retrieval systems. The Merci is a corkscrew device that pulls a clot out, the Penumbra removes it with suction and the new TEVO Pro Retrieval system removes clots in the brain with a tubular spiral design that restores blood flow immediately. We treat aneurysm with coil or stent (wingspan, neuroform), balloon angioplasty or balloon angiography. Stents are also inserted into vessels that form on top of each other or that close from cholesterol and plaque.
